I’d like to take a moment to tell you about an unsolved murder and a sister and investigators determination to bring her justice.
Megan Johns was described by detectives after interviewing her family, friends, and co-workers as one of those rarest of people, generous and friendly.

Megan 29 was a secretary for Smith Barney Shearson Inc. in Las Colinas Texas. She had recently moved from Dallas to Irving and had been in her Irving apartment for about three months in October of 1994.
Megan was celebrating five years of sobriety and had a large circle of friends since working the Narcotics Anonymous program and getting involved in helping others work towards sobriety and stay sober.

Megan volunteered at a Dallas emergency shelter that focused on homeless youth and adults. She was always finding a way to help those she loved and those in her community.
Sargent Rowan who was an investigator on Megan’s case from the beginning said:
“This was a beautiful young girl who was trying to help people and loved kids. She had cleaned her act up, but I think her one mistake, in my opinion, was she was still taking inall these high-risk people and she still thought she could help all these people, Sometimes you can’t help somebody”

Megan was a reliable employee who always showed up at work so on October 5th, 1994 when Megan hadn’t arrived for her shift her employer would call her apartment complex and ask them to please check on her.
An employee at the Apple apartments complex would knock on Megan’s door and when she didn’t answer they would go to the balcony door shimmy it open and find Megan lifeless in her living room.

When investigators arrived The apartment showed obvious signs of a struggle and that Megan had been stabbed and suffered blunt force trauma.
Her purse and its contents were scattered across the living room floor. Investigators stated it looked as if someone was looking for something specific.
Investigators would find traces of blood on the railing to Megan’s bedroom and a partial palm print.
Megan’s bedroom drawers and cabinets laid open and rifled through. A VCR and a piece of jewelry would be the only things noted as missing.

Investigators are positive that Megan knew her killer based on the fact that she was dressed in her Pajamas and there was no sign of forced entry.
They are convinced she let the person or persons in because she trusted them. Investigators believe the person who killed her was possibly looking for quick money for drugs.
Investigators narrowed the suspects down to three or four people people but they were never able to find enough evidence to charge one of them. The partial print is in the system but unfortunately, even today has yet to be matched.
Megan’s sister Bridget was just 9 when her sister was murdered. Despite being so young she still holds precious memories of her sister who used to babysit her. She remembers her older sister doting on her and how incredibly kind-hearted her sister was.

In 2006 when Bridget turned 21 she decided to take Megan’s unsolved case into her own hands and meet with the Irving Police Department to find out why her sister’s case felt like it was forgotten.
What Bridget learned in that meeting with the lead investigator in her sister’s case Tom Rowan was that Megan was far from forgotten.

Rowan pulled out a picture from his wallet of Megan he’d been carrying around for 12 years and showed Bridget that she was always on his mind and they were not giving up on finding her killer.
Bridget left the department that day feeling confident that investigators were doing and would continue to do everything they could to find Megan’s killer.

Megan has some amazing people in her corner, her sister, investigators, and a close friend Kelly who fondly looks back on her wedding photos and sees Megan stand beside her. Kelly and Megan met in high school and had a close friendship throughout the years.

Kelly a retired nurse in 2019 also became concerned about her friend’s unsolved murder and took it upon herself to reach out to the Irving PD to make sure they were actively working on her friend’s case. Knowing that cases get lost in the shuffle she wasn’t about to let them forget Megan.
Kelly would create an online group focused on bringing attention to Megan’s case and hopefully gather more information about who and why someone would take Megan’s life.
She said knowing how long it’s been it may be a struggle to get a conviction but at this point she just wants answers. Who would do that to her loving caring friend who would have done anything to help someone in need?
on the 29th anniversary of Megan’s death, the Irving police department released a video sharing case details in hopes it would generate new leads. I’ll be linking that in the comments and on the sipping on some crime website please go check it out and share.

The way forward with Megan’s case is to keep sharing her face and her story. Putting pressure on those responsible for her murder and letting them know Megan is far from forgotten.
Thank you for taking the time to get to know Megan today and please share her case in whatever format you are most comfortable with. Don’t forget every time we share a face we get closer to solving a case.
